On January 27, 2025, Rwanda-backed M23 rebel forces captured Goma, a key city in eastern DRC. Violence intensified, displacing hundreds of thousands and killing thousands in the span of weeks as the group advanced toward Bukavu. The rapid territorial gains and alleged Rwandan involvement triggered a regional and international crisis.
